English Poetry

English Poetry in our Time

We will read and discuss a selection of poems composed between 1960 and the present day. Our main focus with be on the poets’ approaches to both form and content in their attempts to make sense of life in the twentieth and twenty first centuries. This will involve close readings of the poems, not only through attention to their formal aspects but also by careful consideration of how they convey a sense of the accelerating pace of social and technological changes taking place throughout the period.

We will be reading poems by Philip Larkin, Ted Hughes, Sylvia Plath, Seamus Heaney, Grace Nichols, Helen Dunmore, Carol Ann Duffy, Alice Oswald and Simon Armitage. Student participation in class discussion and in smaller groups will be encouraged.
