English Poetry

During the Reign of Queen Victoria 1837-1901

In this course, we shall read a selection of poems composed during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, considering them in terms of both form and content. Poets will include Alfred Lord Tennyson, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, Robert Browning, Emily Bronte, Christina Rossetti, Gerard Manley Hopkins, and Rudyard Kipling. We will evaluate the impact on their work of the rapid changes taking place in society at the time, such as industrial expansion, the corresponding overcrowding of cities and the contrasting social roles of men and women. Students will be invited to contribute a favourite poem of their choice. The course will consist of readings, short talks, group work and discussions.
