Key Historical Influences on English Garden Design
This course will introduce students to the key periods which have had a lasting influence on English garden design.
This will review some key influences which have shaped English garden design including:
• The legacy of Italian and French Renaissance gardens
• William and Mary Dutch gardens
• Formal Tudor and Elizabethan gardens
• The Landscape movement
• The Victorian years
• Arts and Crafts and Edwardian times.
It will explore details of the style, key features of gardens for each of the above periods. and look at the social, cultural and political factors influencing the garden designs at the time. Examples of specific gardens will be included and we plan to include two garden visits, with coach travel, to illustrate specific garden styles. The cost will be in the region of £34.00 (cheaper if National Trust member)
