Brothers in Arms – William & Henry James

The group will explore the nature of fiction with reference to the work of William and Henry James. The brothers were interested in people as evaluative beings with an outer life of action and an inner life of thought and feeling. William, as psychologist/philosopher, strove to explain this, Henry, as novelist, to show us.  The work of William James will be introduced to the group as extracts. ‘The Figure in the Carpet’; ‘The Portrait of a Lady’ and ‘The Golden Bowl’ by Henry James will be used on the course and the more familiar you are with them the more you will be able to contribute to and benefit from the study days.
