From Moors to Conquistadors: Spain 711 to 1598

This course is designed for lovers of  all things Spanish. We will explore  the impact of history on modern day Spain starting  with the Berber invasion of Spain in 711.   The Golden Age of Islamic Spain was a period of prosperity, innovation, scholarship and religious tolerance on the part of the Islamic population towards Christians and Jews.   The break up of the Caliphate was a major factor in the success of the Reconquista,  completed at  the fall of last Islamic kingdom (Granada) in 1492.  Under the Catholic Monarchs,  Spain was now united and embarked on period of expansion and prosperity . But the Golden Age of the 16th and 17th centuries was also a period of  religious intolerance.
