Mid Twentieth Century Drama

Theatre is always changing; sometimes in response to political upheaval and at others just scrapping its old presentational skills and style of writing. It could also be taken over by one powerful playwright. The years between 1940 and 1960 were remarkable for new ideas. This course will focus on two countries – France and USA. But, as Britain and other Europeans were exciting too, there will be scenes brought in to illustrate both contrasts and similarities.
It will be necessary to enjoy ACTING. Workshop performance will be more important than discussion this time, although I hope that the usual friendly arguments will flourish. I aim to work on both comedy and tragedy.
