Donizetti’s Three (and a bit) Queens

Firstly we will have a look at Donizetti’s life up to his first great international success of Anna Bolena and how this changed his career. We will then watch, discuss and compare excerpts from DVDs of Donizetti’s three great “Queen” operas: Anna Bolena, Maria Stuarda and Roberto Devereux and the use of stories of English monarchy in tightly censored early nineteenth century Italy. Those who know their English history will wonder at some of the deviation from fact – but this is drama and not much to do with history.

And the ‘bit of a Queen’ – we’ll listen to a few minutes and consider where to place Donizetti’s little known Il Castello di Kenilworth. The opera deals with Elizabeth’s other great love – Robert Dudley, Earl of Leicester and preceded Anna Bolena by just a few months.
