English Love Poetry

In this course, we shall read a range of selected love poems composed between the 16th century and the present day. We shall discuss them in terms of both form and content, and consider how they demonstrate changes in poetic styles and in social attitudes over time.  Poets will include Shakespeare, Donne, Herrick, Dryden, Elizabeth and Robert Browning, Christina Rossetti, Auden, Betjeman, Larkin, Angelou, Duffy and Cope among others. Students will be invited to contribute a favourite poem of choice. The course will consist of readings, short talks, discussions, group work and an outing to visit the archives at the University of Gloucestershire in Cheltenham.
